If you are looking for a quick dinner idea, try these crispy and juicy chicken sausages. They are cooked in your air fryer and go perfectly with crispy air fried onions.
Why this recipe is just so good...
- Using your air fryer to grill sausages is so quick and easy. On the nights when you don't want to grill outside or even deal with frying on your stovetop, air frying is the way to go! Including cooking the onions, dinner is ready in under 30 minutes!
- You don't have to watch over it as closely as a grill and the clean up is so easy. I am using a Phillips Air Fryer XXL and like many air fryers, the basket and pan can go in the dishwasher. (check your brand for dishwasher compatibility)
- Chicken sausages are also a healthy option for getting in your protein. Lower in fat than pork sausages, they get a nice sear on them and get just as browned and crispy.
Ingredient Notes
- We are using a brand of precooked chicken sausages called alfresco. They have varieties such as sweet apple, roasted garlic, jalapeno, Italian style and roasted pepper. We chose the jalapeno flavor because my Sweet jalapeno orange relish is one of my husband's favorites and it goes really well with sausages. My Mustard Relish is a close second!
How to cook chicken sausages
- Use a large Sweet Vidalia or yellow onion for the air fried onions. Slice them thinly and sprinkle with some garlic powder, salt and pepper. Drizzle a bit of olive oil and stir to mix together.
- Preheat the air fryer to 375°F for 5 minutes.
- Place onions in basket and cook for about 15 minutes, stopping and stirring the onions at 5 minute intervals. They are done when they are browned and crispy.
- Remove and let drain on a paper towel lined plate, cover with foil while cooking sausages.
- Preheat air fryer to 375°F for 5 minutes. Place chicken sausage in fryer and cook for 4-5 minutes. Turn sausages and cook for another 4-5 minutes or until meat thermometer registers 165°F.
Cooking Tips
- You don't have to poke holes in the sausages. Leave them whole so the juices stay inside.
- Try not to crowd the air fryer so that the sausages have air space to cook evenly.
- If you have problems with your air fryer smoking when cooking sausages Air Fryer Guide recommends adding a few tablespoons of water underneath the basket before cooking. Or you can try putting a slice of bread on the bottom to absorb any grease. However, safety first, if you have any concerns about your air fryer smoking, turn it off, unplug it. Then consult your user's manual.
- According to the USDA, the internal temperature of chicken sausage should be 165°F. Test the sausage with a meat thermometer in the center of the link.
- These sausages would also be delicious with Fried Cabbage or Sautéed Brussels Sprouts as a healthy, low carb and keto side dish.

Description
If you are looking for a quick dinner idea, try these crispy and juicy chicken sausages. They are cooked in your air fryer and go perfectly with crispy air fried onions.
Ingredients
- 4 chicken sausage links ( I used a jalapeno pepper flavored variety by al fresco)*
- 1 large yellow onion
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
Instructions
- Preheat air fryer to 375°F for 5 minutes.
- Thinly slice onion. Stir together the oil and seasonings in a bowl and place onion in bowl, stir to make sure onion is covered with the oil.
- Place onions in air fryer basket and cook for about 15 minutes, stopping and stirring the onions at 5 minutes intervals. They are done when browned and crispy. Remove to a paper towel lined plate, cover with foil while cooking sausages.
- Place chicken sausages in preheated air fryer and cook 4-5 minutes. * Turn sausages and cook another 4-5 minutes or until meat thermometer registers 165°F.
- Serve with the crispy air fried onions and relish.
Notes
*The al fresco chicken sausage are a precooked variety as most brands are.
*Some people like to poke holes in sausages either thinking this will avoid them bursting or to help drain some fat. I have never found it necessary to avoid bursting. And the fat is where the juicy flavor comes from. You can drain them on paper towel after they are cooked to remove any extra greasy coating. But I never poke holes because I want the juice to stay inside.
* And speaking of grease, it is recommended to air fry in a well ventilated room. I always turn my oven fan on before I start. I have also read that adding a few tablespoons of water to the very bottom of the basket or putting in a slice of bread to absorb the grease before you cook can prevent smoking. But safety first, turn off and unplug fryer if you have any concerns and consult your user's manual.
